My LASIK/PRK doc told me that you have to be awake to keep staring at the blinking red light. The anxiety is the one thing that I’m afraid of…even with Valium that he does provide. He does use numbing drops, so you do not feel a thing…and he will have me concentrating on a little red dot and focusing on it for the whole 3-5 minutes per eye while he does his thing.
The reason he doesn’t want his patients to be knocked out or heavily sedated is because the more drowsy you are, the more likely it is you will lose concentration and move your eye.
My husband had it about 3 weeks ago, and he says he didn’t see anything but the red light and didn’t feel anything. I have my PRK tomorrow morning and am probably thinking it will be worse than it actually will be.
The link below is the one that I really used to research the procedure itself…if you’re squeemish, do not look at the pictures at the bottoms of the articles. Since you didn’t specify which correction disorder you have, that is the page that lists them all. Beware, it is a bit technical, but you can get the general gist of it.
Yes, they give you medication and numb your eyes with drops so you can feel anything. When its over you have to wear really dark sunglasses that they give you so it doesn’t damage your eyes with the sun beating on them…
Yeah you are awake but they usually give you a Valium which will ease your nervousness and make you relax a lot to the point of close to falling asleep….they will give you numbing eye drops so you won’t feel anything…. no they do not want you to sleep they want you to respond to there commands.
God I hope not is all I can say! Good question! I have considered it too……but never thought abt wether I can sleep when my eyes are stuck open with tools! Yikes!
Good luck…..
Yes, you are awake. You get a topical anasthaesia on the eye and something like Valium to sedate you. It doesn’t hurt at all though people have commented that it’s very disconcerting when you suddenly lose your vision for a bit during the surgery (they lift up your cornea and tinker with your retina and you temporarily lose your vision).
YES YOU ARE AWAKE DURING THE PROCEDURE, USUALLY WITH EYE SURGERY , THE DOCTOR WILL NOT HAVE YOU KNOCKED OUT BECAUSE IF YOU FALL ASLEEP YOU MAY SNORE OR MOVE YOUR HEAD SO THEY REALLY NEED YOU TO STAY AWAKE.
Lasik eye surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and lasik surgery in India by a company called Forerunners Healthcare. The Price for dental and lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.
Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories.
They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
Hope this helps.
I’m an eye surgeon, yes you will be awake [ it's the better choice ] but you will be sedated . we don’t do anything to your retina [OMG] it’s just the cornea that we operate upon
