How Good Is Swimming For Weight Loss & Toning Up?

I have just started swimming at my gym, I usually do 20-30 lengths of a full size pool and I swim breast stroke. How affective is it for weight loss and toning up? I go at least 3 times per week and I also go to the gym 1-2 per week (15 mins on tredmill, 15min on bike & 10 min cross trainer + some weights).

Swimming is awesome for working out! Your endurance seems to be coming along well now you need to start adding send-offs. Look for a big seconds clock on the wall. The pool is probably 25 yards. Try something like this…
    Week One: 20 x25s on 60 seconds.
(That means you are going to swim 20 lengths.) Leave every time on the top of the clock. So if you get to the wall in 20 seconds you have 40 seconds to rest before you start the next one. Or if you get to the wall in 29 seconds you have 31 seconds to start the next one.
    Week Two: 15 x 50s on 60 seconds
You are going to swim two lengths (50 yards) 15 times.
    Then keep improving your distance (25, 50, 75 yards) and dropping the send-offs (30, 60, 90 seconds).
This is more effective than just swimming laps for 30 minutes. To get more info. ask your pool for information about master’s swimming!

Very good. It’s low impact and works on many muscle groups that you wouldn’t normally use. Keep it up and you’ll be fitter than a butchers dog.

Swimming is THE BEST cross train you can do for an alternative to being at the gym lifting weight etc. You will burn cals lose fat and increas your stamina and strength. Not to mention it is a low impact workout so your joints will stay in tact.
A few tips: Try to switch up your strokes use Breast, Freestyle, Sidestroke those three are your best bet and when breast/sidestroking focus on your scissor kicks as it will work your legs well. Also try a forced lap swim pref long ways across the pool (50m) swim a lap rest for 20 second swim another (do these laps as fast as you can swim) and do about 15-20 laps when you swim… Slowly start decreasing your rest time and before you know it you will lose alot of weight and look really good not to mention being able to swim a good solid 500m (10 laps) without even stopping.

Swimming is excellent for toning. However dispite what some other answerers said, it is NOT aerobic. It is anerobic. Swimming does not burn calories as well as cardiovascular excercises like riding a bike or running. However with the treadmill and bike/cross trainer you will lose weight quickly, and with swimming you should have excellent tone. As for some suggestions for swimming. If you want more muscular tone and feel you can do it. Do a set like this.
4-6 laps freestyle (American Crawl) followed by 1-2 laps with a kickboard or just kicking
then do 10 sets of 1-2 laps at 75% speed american crawl
finally do a set of 8 1-2 laps 75% speed alternating between backstroke, breast stroke, american crawl and Butterfly (Butterfly is a AWESOME back workout)
Then do 10 sets 1 lap full sprint stroke of choice.
Last but not least 4 sets, 4 laps and you do every stroke
then do a 4-6 lap cooldown swim.
Idealy you can get this all done in less than 2 hours and you will have some incredible tone.

Its an excellent aerobic exercise. It works all the muscles, stretches the ligaments and improves flexibility, burns calories, and is a great form of cross-training. About the only thing it won’t do is resolve the Iraq War or fix the national debt, but it will promote your sex appeal.

Swimming is the best exercise there could possibly be for your body ever!
Once you are used to swimming, you may want to increase your laps and try some freestyle.
Really focus on your form and you’ll be toned in no time!
