I am tired of my contacts and glasses, I am very nearsighted. I have thought about the lasik thing, but have heard about side effects.

I was about 20/250 before Lasik surgery last year. The procedure was painless, probably due to the Valium they gave me. The ride home (as a passenger, of course) was fairly uncomfortable, mainly due to light sensitivity. The doctor gave me dark goggles, but the light was still too bright. I was in some pain once I got home (maybe 3 hours post procedure), but I had some left over Vicodin, and took two doses of that. The Vicodin took the edge off. Slept fine that night. Woke up the next morning, and I COULD SEE FINE! Hallelujah! I was jazzed up about that. I drove myself to my one day check up (an 2 hour round trip) with no problems. For that check up, I was seeing at 20/25, less than 24 hours after the surgery. I went to work that afternoon (doing ultrasound which really requires you to use your eyes). For my one week check up, I was seeing between 20/20 and 20/15. Other than the touch of pain I had post procedure, before I went to bed for the night, I had no other problems. I would do it again in a heartbeat!
Just one other thing….I went to a doctor who used computerized, lazer equipment. No knives were involved. But, it cost me a pretty penny. I paid $5500 total for both eyes, but I was not comfortable going to a doctor that advertized in the newpaper for $500 per eye. Sometimes you get what you pay for! Good luck to you!
I’m in the same boat. I really wanna get it but I’ve heard that there are a lot of problems with night vision…halos, etc… So, I’m gonna keep my eye on this question. I’m very interested in what others have to say.
I WAS VERY NEAR-SIGHTED AS WELL. I HAD IT DONE IN THE EARLY 90′S AND IT IS WONDERFUL. I HAVE NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.
I have not had it done, but I am studying in the vision care field. If you notice any issues with glare right now, like halos around lights at night, they will likely be worse after. Also, vision correction surgery is not guaranteed to give you perfect vision, but only to reduce your dependence on glasses or contacts. Also, since procedures like LASIK are relatively new, there are no case studies showing the long term side effects of the procedure either. For many people with high prescriptions, they are very pleased with their results, because their vision is a lot better afterwards. Talk to your eye doctor at your next exam and he or she should be able to refer you to someone who can sit down with you for a consultation and possibly perform the surgery.
I had it done almost two years ago. I was very near-sided and I had an astigmatism. My best advice is to do your research. Look for a doctor that has a lot of experience with lasik and a lot of positive feedback from his/her patients. A little research goes a long way. It was probably the best investment of my life because my vision is now 20/10 (much better than average) and the recovery was really quick to. Hopefully this helped, and best of luck. ^.^
